One of the best things about Rotary is how quickly a good idea can turn into real impact — especially when clubs come together across districts and even across countries.
This fall, Rotary clubs from multiple communities united for an inspiring international service project called “Mi Mochila, Tu Mochila” (“My Backpack, Your Backpack”).
Together, four Rotary Clubs worked side-by-side to provide 460 backpacks filled with school supplies to deserving children in first through sixth grade in Acuña, Mexico.
The backpacks were delivered to seven schools on the students’ very first day back to school, September 1, 2025.
A True Rotary Partnership
This project was hosted by the Rotary Club of Acuña Empresarial (District 4110), with support from:
-
Rotary Club of Del Rio, Texas (District 5840)
-
Rotary Club of Fort Collins (District 5440)
-
Rotary Club of Fort Collins Foothills (District 5440)
Our District 5440 clubs contributed more than just funding — they brought energy, heart, and hands-on service.
Clubs from our district sent over $2,700 and a team of 10 Rotarians and family members who traveled to be part of the experience in person.
Service (and Fellowship) in Motion
The journey began in San Antonio on August 30, where the team enjoyed some local food and activities before heading to Del Rio the next day.
On the evening of August 31, the real work began in Acuña at the home of Rotarians Veronica and Oscar Navaratte, where volunteers gathered to assemble all 460 backpacks.
In just two hours, the group filled each backpack with supplies for primary and middle school students.
And because Rotary is Rotary, the night didn’t end with just service — it ended with an incredible meal, warm hospitality, and plenty of laughter and connection among members of all four clubs.
Delivering Smiles and Support
On September 1, Rotarians traveled to seven different schools and personally delivered the backpacks to children who greeted them with excitement and appreciation.
Projects like this remind us why we do what we do: improving education, supporting literacy, and showing young students that their community — and Rotary — believes in them.
The smiles on the children’s faces were unforgettable.
Looking Ahead
This partnership was such a success that plans are already underway to expand the program and make Mi Mochila, Tu Mochila an annual service project.
It’s a perfect example of Rotary’s ability to bring communities together across borders to create meaningful, lasting impact — and to create a few “Rotary Moments” along the way.
